Grams and carats are units of measurement used to determine the weight of gemstones.
Carat (English carat , abbreviation ct ) is a unit of measurement used to measure the weight of polished jewelry and precious stones. in 1907 the International Committee of Weights and Measures conference in Paris adopted the metric carat equal to 200 milligrams (mg) or 0.2 gram (g). Until then, the carat weight had changed, so the weight of historical diamonds may no longer correspond.
The name comes from the pod of the sweet carob ( Ceratonia siliqua ), the seeds of which were used for weighing, since the weight of each seed is almost the same and weighs exactly 0.2 grams. Jewelers have used them as weights since time immemorial.
In some countries (e.g. England, Switzerland), the carat measurement system is used to measure the amount of precious metal in 1 kilogram of alloy. However, precious metal is usually measured in fines. For example 999 fineness is 24 carats in 24 g alloy.
The carat is also divided into 100 parts (points or pt.), so the weight of diamonds is usually indicated with two decimal places.
